Hampden by RMA is a boutique collection of nine large-scale apartment residences on a tree-lined corner of Armadale, one of Melbourne’s most coveted addresses. Rob Mills and his team at Rob Mills Architecture & Interiors designed and delivered this signature project in-house. Its penthouse residence crowns the entire top floor of the building, and provides an exceptional living environment.

As designer, client and resident, every element of this penthouse was crafted to reflect not only the needs of Rob Mills’ family but also the philosophy of his integrated practice: intelligent architecture, healthy design, a tradition of craftsmanship and a deep connection with nature. The design vision for the penthouse was to use space, form, texture and technology to create a home that is, simply put, a joy to come home to. Various rooms are infused with colour, and space is afforded for private collections of the residents gathered over a lifetime of furniture and art appreciation. Panoramic views are afforded over the streets of Armadale, towards the city, and beyond to the waters of Port Phillip Bay. Every interior space looks outward into a vibrant garden, planted as a boundary of the terrace which encircles the penthouse. A hallmark of RMA’s interior design is the artful combination of surfaces and tones that work together in concert, allowing the eye to travel uninterrupted across a space. Living areas are enveloped by large sheets of glass open to the sky and panoramic views, while stone flooring and dark-toned surfaces create a sense of solidity and permanence in the kitchen. This building design embodies the fundamental principles of sustainable design, such as a 7-star energy rating, passive solar design, low toxicity paints, window gardens, double glazing, acoustic insulation and intuitive technology. As a natural evolution from sustainability in architecture, wellbeing is increasingly being pursued to enrich the health of its occupants. The design encapsulates components that minimise disruption to circadian rhythms, improve sleep and optimise cognitive and emotional health. Spaces have been created to provide natural ventilation, optimum air quality, water purification systems, and high-quality water-saving plumbing fittings and fixtures. Hampden Penthouse is a pure expression of joy – from the expansive interiors flooded with sunlight and enriched by colour to the rooftop patio encircling the building to provide uninterrupted views framed by nature. RMA has drawn upon its deep knowledge of single residences and apartment projects to create a sustainable and healthy environment that ultimately delivers a superior living experience.
